What's actually changing?
The Private Health Insurance Rebate currently pays back a percentage of your premium — with a higher rate for people aged 65 and over (and higher again for 70+). From 1 April 2027, the government has proposed removing that age loading. Everyone in the same income tier will get the same rebate, regardless of age.
Under 65
Nothing changes. Your rebate percentage stays exactly the same.
Aged 65 and over
Your rebate drops to the under‑65 rate for your income tier — a higher net premium for the same cover.
Top income tier
Already on 0% rebate (Tier 3)? The change doesn't affect you.
